Presentation

GTR Performance is the european leader of mechanical fun sports. A national race track, 400 vehicles, renewed each year, 'nuff said.

Founded in 2000 GTR has a solid and professional reputation. They're fun but in charge and don't mess around with safety.
Most of their activity is generated by big companies organizing dynamic seminars on their facility. The logo had thus to stay highly corporate.

This a redesign of an existing logo and one key element is that a blue star, present from the beginning, had to stay.

Existing elements, graphic constraints and requirements

Here is their old logo.
I didn't get the chance to discuss the rationale of it with the previous designer, but I assume the open letters were meant to evoke a road/ race track line. The blue star, their trademark, is also there and was the only element that I was asked to keep.

After some discussions, we decided to revert (it was five in the very first logo, and I felt it was more relevant to racing) to a five points stars instead of the six ones.

Design Process

A fluid redesign implies being not too confusing for the existing clients, improvements yes, but the basic concepts are preferably kept.

Apart from the star reverting to five points and getting more integration in the curve of the G, I opted for refreshing the concept of having letters evoking a road/racetrack.

An increased personalisation and relevance was achieved by using the shape of their own racetrack.

I also chose to accentuate the perspective effect the race track inherently had. The enhanced perspective works wonders to convey speed, movement (think of the sight of a racecar when viewed from a spectator point of view) and also the aerodynamics typical of race engines.
