STAR ONE

Overview

Star One is a french and english TV production company mainly operating in the Emirates and more generally, the Middle East.

I was given total freedom for the main mark, the clients only had two requirements: a very classic and extended typeface, and nothing too obvious,  could even be abstract, for the symbol.

Inspiration

This project was axtually tricky. It had to convey a middle east feeling but not too obviously.
My reflections mainly focused on staying away from political, economical and religious connotations, things that jump easily to mind when thinking about Middle East.
So the islamic designs elements were out, so were the petrol and oil drilling visuals.

After some research I discovered there was a long tradition of falconry in the Emirates and thought it was my golden ticket. Furthermore when my clients business deals with documentary and TV programs, hence having a strong "seeing" component. The falcon and its razor sharp vision seemed absolutely relevant.

To go further into the Middle East evocation and global vision themes, I thought the dunes were the perfect crossover between wings and oriental landscapes.

Sketches

Please remember this was taken with a potato phone in 2008, thanks.

At first I tried to integrate the beak of the falcon into the S but found it made the design too confusing so I reverted to a separate icon/monogram combination.

Font inspiration

My clients actually had a precise idea of the font they wanted. It was taken from a door of a well know parisian gallery, La Samaritaine.
The type is wide and serious, so I saw no problem with this choice.
